What’s a Choir?” to Center Stage: My Journey Empowering Young Voices
Walking into EWS International School in Cambodia felt like stepping onto a new adventure! Imagine this: one teacher, eleven different classes, from the littlest ones in elementary school all the way up to high schoolers! In an international school, your morning could go from teaching a 3-year-old a simple tune to guiding an 18-year-old through complex harmonies. It’s a beautiful kind of crazy!
When I first told my students I’d be their choir teacher, the question that echoed back was, ‘Choir? What’s a choir, Teacher?’ It struck me – we were starting from the very beginning, just like my ‘Areamondo’ choir courses back in Italy. And just like that first children’s choir I started in Cambodia.
So, I began with the basics: singing together, listening to each other’s voices while finding my own, and working as a team to sing at the same time. When I asked who knew about music, only a few could name even the basic notes. We were building from the ground up.
I spent countless hours listening to music, getting a simple taste of music language, practicing sounds, and learning how to breathe, support our voices, and find our singing voice. Then came the fun part – tackling English lyrics! I worked on saying the words clearly, repeating and repeating until those songs became our own.
Thanks to their amazing enthusiasm and their willingness to dive into the joy of singing, I did it! I performed – first at a Christmas concert in town, then at the city’s most famous music school (where I also had a manager role!), and finally on the grand stage of a renowned university in the capital (you can see the pictures!).
This journey at EWS wasn’t just about teaching music; it was about unlocking potential and building confidence, step by step. It’s the same approach I bring to my private tutoring and my Music&English courses. I’ve seen firsthand how a little guidance and a lot of fun can help children discover their voices and a love for music, no matter their starting point.
