“Here I am in the lovely garden of Raffles Hotel Le Royal in Cambodia, showing you one of my fun music games – this musical mat! Just like my ‘magic carpet’ and lots of other games, books, and songs I’ve made, it helps kids love and understand music. My ‘magic carpet’ is great because it helps little ones get used to seeing music notes on the lines.
People often ask if you can teach 3 or 4-year-olds to read music notes. Yes, you can! You just need to make it easy and fun for them. Simple ideas that you do again and again, and that make them smile – that’s what works best with kids. It might seem easy, but putting all those things together takes thought. My ‘magic carpet’ makes kids move, helps them remember, gets them used to where things are, builds a basic idea in their heads that they won’t forget, and lets them move around in different ways – all while getting ready to learn about music!”
